What Is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used planetary period system in Vedic astrology. "Vimshottari" means 120 — the full cycle lasts 120 years, distributed across nine planets. Each planet rules a specific number of years, and within each Mahadasha, nine sub-periods (Antardashas) follow the same order.

Your birth nakshatra (the constellation the Moon occupies at birth) determines which Mahadasha you are born into and how far through that period you begin. This makes birth time critically important — even 30 minutes can shift the Moon across a nakshatra boundary, changing your Dasha starting point by months or years.

The Mahadasha planet shapes the overarching themes of its period — career, relationships, health, and spiritual development all tend to align with that planet's natural significations. The Antardasha adds a secondary flavour within that larger window.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used Vedic timing system. It divides life into planetary periods totalling 120 years, each ruled by one of 9 planets. Your Moon's nakshatra at birth determines which planet's period (Mahadasha) you start in. Sub-periods (Antardasha, Pratyantar, Sookshma) subdivide each era into finer windows.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

Mahadasha is the major period — lasting 6 to 20 years depending on the planet (e.g., Venus Mahadasha is 20 years, Sun is 6 years). Antardasha is the sub-period within a Mahadasha, lasting months to a few years. Pratyantar and Sookshma are further subdivisions for precise timing of specific events.

What is a Saturn Return?

A Saturn Return occurs approximately every 29.5 years when transiting Saturn returns to the exact degree of your natal Saturn. It marks a major turning point — the first return (ages 28–30) often brings career, relationship, and identity restructuring. The second return (ages 58–60) is a reassessment of legacy and purpose.

How does Yogini Dasha differ from Vimshottari?

Yogini Dasha is an alternative Vedic system totalling 36 years, ruled by 8 planetary goddesses (Yoginis). Periods are shorter — ranging from 1 to 8 years — and many practitioners use it alongside Vimshottari for cross-verification of timing for specific events.
