Yoga Library

A comprehensive reference for all major Vedic astrology yogas — how they form, how strong they are, when they activate, and what results they bring.

In Vedic astrology, a yoga (Sanskrit: योग) is a specific planetary combination that produces a distinct result. Yogas operate primarily during the dasha (planetary period) of the involved planets — their effects may be latent until activated.

How Yogas Work

Formation

A yoga forms when planets occupy specific signs, houses, or relationships to each other at the moment of birth. Unlike Western aspects, most Vedic yogas are based on sign placement, not exact degree angles.

Activation

Most yogas remain latent until the Vimshottari dasha period of an involved planet. A Gaja Kesari yoga may not give full results until the Jupiter dasha — which could be decades into life.

Modification

Every yoga is modified by the strength and condition of the planets involved. A Raja Yoga with debilitated planets gives modest results. The same yoga with exalted planets in kendra gives extraordinary results.

Cancellation

Some yogas cancel others. Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga cancels debilitation. Kemdrum Bhanga cancels Kemdrum. Always check cancellation conditions before predicting harsh results.

Raja Yogas11 covered

Success, authority, and worldly recognition. These yogas activate career peaks and leadership roles during their dasha periods.

Dhana Yogas6 covered

Wealth, abundance, and prosperity. These yogas bring financial gains — especially potent when the 2nd or 11th lords are involved.

Important yogas that don't fit a single category — often planet-exchange or combination yogas with wide-ranging effects.

Dosha Yogas3 covered

Challenges and karmic tests. These yogas create difficult experiences that ultimately lead to growth and transformation.

Raja Yogas

Ruchaka Yoga

High strength

Formation

Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation (Capricorn) in a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th).

Result

Exceptional physical vitality, martial courage, strong willpower, and executive leadership. Natives often excel in the military, surgery, sports, or law enforcement.

When Active

Strongest during Mars dasha/antardasha. Also activated when Mars transits its natal position or the kendra it occupies.

Practitioner note: Check if Mars is also unafflicted (not combust, not in Papa Kartari). Afflicted Ruchaka gives the energy but also recklessness.

Bhadra Yoga

High strength

Formation

Mercury in its own sign (Gemini, Virgo) or exaltation (Virgo) in a kendra house.

Result

Sharp intellect, excellent memory, eloquence, and success in writing, business, commerce, mathematics, and media.

When Active

Mercury dasha/antardasha. Mercury is also fast-moving, so its transits through the natal kendra regularly reinforce this yoga.

Hamsa Yoga

High strength

Formation

Jupiter in its own sign (Sagittarius, Pisces) or exaltation (Cancer) in a kendra house.

Result

Wisdom, dharma, spiritual elevation, and prosperity. Natives tend to be learned, philosophical, and respected as teachers or counselors.

When Active

Jupiter dasha/antardasha. Jupiter's slow 12-year transit cycle means it re-activates the yoga house roughly once every 12 years.

Malavya Yoga

High strength

Formation

Venus in its own sign (Taurus, Libra) or exaltation (Pisces) in a kendra house.

Result

Beauty, artistic talent, luxury, romantic fulfillment, and success in the creative arts, entertainment, and fashion.

When Active

Venus dasha/antardasha, especially when Venus is also the 5th or 7th lord.

Sasa Yoga

High strength

Formation

Saturn in its own sign (Capricorn, Aquarius) or exaltation (Libra) in a kendra house.

Result

Disciplined authority, longevity, success through sustained effort, and leadership in law, politics, or large organizations.

When Active

Saturn dasha. Due to Saturn's slow movement, results often manifest after age 36 and build steadily throughout life.

Practitioner note: Sasa Yoga natives often have difficult early lives but extraordinary later-life success — Saturn rewards patience.

Raja Yoga

High strength

Formation

Lord of a trikona house (1st, 5th, 9th) and lord of a kendra house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are conjunct or in mutual aspect — especially when the lagna lord is one of them.

Result

Success, authority, leadership, and recognition. The strongest classical marker of worldly achievement in Vedic astrology.

When Active

Both participating planets' dasha and antardasha periods. The strongest activation occurs when both run sequentially.

Practitioner note: Quality matters more than quantity. One strong Raja Yoga in a good sign outperforms five weak ones.

Dharma-Karma Adhipati Yoga

High strength

Formation

The 9th lord (dharma) and 10th lord (karma) conjoin, exchange signs, or aspect each other.

Result

Career aligned with purpose and dharma — often in teaching, medicine, law, spiritual work, or service that benefits society.

When Active

9th or 10th lord dasha periods. Most powerful when Jupiter also aspects the combination.

Gaja Kesari Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Jupiter in a kendra position (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) from the natal Moon.

Result

Wisdom, eloquence, enduring fame, and respect. The native commands authority through knowledge and benefits greatly from mentors and teachers.

When Active

Jupiter and Moon dasha/antardasha. Most impactful when Jupiter is also strong (own sign, exaltation, or well-aspected).

Practitioner note: Gaja Kesari is one of the most common yogas — its quality varies enormously depending on Jupiter's sign, house, and aspects.

Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga

High strength

Formation

A debilitated planet is 'cancelled' by one of several conditions: its dispositor is in a kendra, the planet that would exalt in that sign is in a kendra, or the debilitated planet exchanges signs with its dispositor.

Result

Extraordinary rise after initial adversity. Natives often overcome severe early obstacles to achieve remarkable success — especially notable in politics and business.

When Active

The debilitated planet's dasha. The 'cancellation' transforms weakness into exceptional strength when activated.

Practitioner note: This yoga requires careful verification — not every debilitated planet achieves Neecha Bhanga. The cancellation condition must be clearly met.

Viparita Raja Yoga

High strength

Formation

Lords of the dusthana houses (6th, 8th, 12th) occupy other dusthana houses and are not associated with kendra or trikona lords.

Result

Success through apparent failure. The native gains through enemies' defeat, inheritance, hidden sources, or from situations that seem catastrophic — especially during their dasha periods.

When Active

6th, 8th, or 12th lord dasha periods. Characterized by unexpected reversals of fortune in the native's favor.

Guru-Mangala Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Jupiter and Mars are in kendra relationship with each other (one is in the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th from the other).

Result

Principled leadership — combines Jupiter's wisdom with Mars' courage. Excellence in education administration, military command, law, or dharmic leadership.

When Active

Jupiter-Mars antardasha combinations. Strongest when both are well-placed in their own or exaltation signs.

Dhana Yogas

Lakshmi Yoga

High strength

Formation

Venus (natural wealth karaka) is in its own sign or exaltation AND is in a trikona or kendra. The 9th lord is also strong.

Result

Extraordinary wealth, beauty, luxury, and prosperity. Named for the goddess of abundance — one of the premier wealth yogas.

When Active

Venus dasha, particularly during its antardasha in the 9th lord's period (or vice versa).

Saraswati Yoga

High strength

Formation

Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury all occupy kendras, trikonas, or the 2nd house — and at least one is in its own or exaltation sign.

Result

Supreme intellectual and creative gifts. Excellence in writing, scholarship, music, fine arts, and academia. Financial success through knowledge.

When Active

Jupiter or Venus dasha, especially when Mercury is also strong and in a good dasha.

Adhi Yoga

High strength

Formation

Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter are in the 6th, 7th, and 8th houses from the Moon (in any combination among these three houses).

Result

Leadership, wealth, and honor. Natives become commanders, ministers, or prominent in their field. A very auspicious yoga for worldly success.

When Active

Venus, Mercury, or Jupiter dasha periods when these planets are well-placed.

Vasumati Yoga

Medium strength

Formation

All benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, Moon) are in upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) from the Lagna or Moon.

Result

Great wealth and prosperity. The name means 'possessing riches' — financial abundance through career and effort.

When Active

Benefic planets' dasha periods. The yoga grows stronger over time as the upachaya houses improve with age.

Chandra-Mangala Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Moon and Mars are conjunct or in mutual aspect.

Result

Wealth through real estate, manufacturing, agriculture, or trade. Strong financial drive and business acumen. Can also indicate an emotionally driven temperament.

When Active

Moon or Mars dasha/antardasha. Most positive when both are in good signs and free from affliction.

Practitioner note: When Moon and Mars are afflicted (in dusthanas, debilitation), this yoga can manifest as financial volatility rather than steady wealth.

Budha-Aditya Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Sun and Mercury conjunct (in the same sign).

Result

Intelligence, analytical ability, communication skills, and recognition through intellect. Success in writing, government service, and business.

When Active

Sun or Mercury dasha. Note that Mercury is often combust when conjunct the Sun — check if Mercury is ahead of or behind the Sun (retrograde Mercury may escape combust).

Practitioner note: If Mercury is not combust (within 14°), Budha-Aditya is positive. If combust, the native has ability but struggles to express it or gain recognition.

Spiritual Yogas

Amala Yoga

Medium strength

Formation

A natural benefic planet (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, unafflicted Moon) occupies the 10th house from the Lagna or Moon.

Result

An unblemished, virtuous reputation. The native is remembered for their good character and humanitarian contributions long after their death.

When Active

The benefic planet's dasha. Most powerful with Jupiter or Venus in the 10th.

Chamara Yoga

Medium strength

Formation

Jupiter or Venus is in the Lagna (1st house) in its own or exaltation sign, or the Lagna lord is in exaltation in a kendra aspected by Jupiter.

Result

Royal bearing, learning, eloquence, and recognition as an intellectual or spiritual authority. The native commands respect through wisdom.

When Active

Jupiter, Venus, or Lagna lord dasha periods.

Lunar Yogas

Sunapha Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

A planet other than Sun or Rahu/Ketu occupies the 2nd house from the Moon.

Result

Self-earned wealth, intelligence, and success through one's own effort — not inherited. The nature depends on which planet forms the yoga.

When Active

The yoga planet's dasha and the Moon dasha.

Practitioner note: Jupiter in 2nd from Moon = exceptional Sunapha; Mars = wealth through effort; Mercury = through commerce.

Anapha Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

A planet other than Sun or Rahu/Ketu occupies the 12th house from the Moon.

Result

Fame, good character, leadership, and physical health. The native has a magnetic personality and tends to be well-respected.

When Active

The yoga planet's dasha and Moon dasha. Most favorable with Jupiter, Venus, or Mercury.

Durudhara Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Planets occupy both the 2nd and 12th houses from the Moon (both Sunapha and Anapha present simultaneously).

Result

Wealth, fame, and generosity. A more powerful combination than either Sunapha or Anapha alone — resources flow in and out, but the native prospers.

When Active

Any of the involved planets' dasha periods.

Kemdrum Yoga

Low strength

Formation

No planets occupy the 2nd or 12th from the Moon, AND no planets conjunct the Moon.

Result

Loneliness, instability, poverty of support (if unmodified). The Moon is isolated, weakening the mind and emotional support systems.

When Active

Moon dasha can be particularly challenging. However, strong planets in kendras or a strong lagna lord can cancel this yoga.

Practitioner note: Kemdrum is often cancelled (Kemdrum Bhanga) if any planet is in a kendra from the Lagna or Moon, or if the Moon is in a kendra. Check carefully before concluding the yoga is active.

Shubha Kartari Yoga

Medium strength

Formation

A house or the Lagna is flanked by natural benefic planets (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, unafflicted Moon) on both sides.

Result

Protection, support, and positive results for that house's significations. Like being supported on both sides — what the house represents flourishes.

When Active

The benefic planets' dasha periods, particularly when they transit through the yoga houses.

General Yogas

Parivartana Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Two planets occupy each other's signs (sign exchange). E.g., Sun in Libra and Venus in Leo.

Result

The two planets strengthen each other and behave as if conjunct in both signs. The strength of the yoga depends on the houses involved and the planets' natural relationship.

When Active

Either planet's dasha/antardasha. The exchange makes both houses active simultaneously.

Practitioner note: Parivartana between trikona lords is especially auspicious. Between dusthana lords, it can intensify difficult results.

Dosha Yogas

Papa Kartari Yoga

Low strength

Formation

A house is flanked by natural malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu) on both sides.

Result

The significations of the afflicted house are squeezed — health challenges for the 1st, marital difficulties for the 7th, career obstacles for the 10th.

When Active

The malefic planets' dasha periods and their transits over the house.

Kaal Sarp Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

All seven visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) fall between Rahu and Ketu on one side of the chart — none outside the Rahu-Ketu axis.

Result

Intense focus and single-mindedness, but also karmic delays, sudden reversals, and intense life experiences. Can bring extraordinary success after sustained struggle.

When Active

Rahu and Ketu dasha periods. Also activated by Rahu-Ketu transits and eclipses.

Practitioner note: Kaal Sarp is frequently over-diagnosed. Verify that ALL seven planets are strictly between Rahu and Ketu. Partial configurations are much milder.

Guru Chandal Yoga

Varies strength

Formation

Jupiter conjuncts or is closely aspected by Rahu (and sometimes Ketu) in the same sign.

Result

Unorthodox wisdom, challenges with ethics and authority figures, interest in taboo or esoteric subjects. Can manifest as a powerful teacher of unconventional knowledge or as moral confusion.

When Active

Rahu or Jupiter dasha/antardasha. Eclipse seasons near natal Jupiter also activate this yoga.

Practitioner note: Many great spiritual reformers and alternative thinkers have Guru Chandal Yoga. The energy is powerful — the direction depends on the chart as a whole.
