27 Nakshatras
The 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — each a unique cosmic energy that shapes personality, destiny, and spiritual path.
The Moon travels through all 27 Nakshatras in a single lunar month — spending roughly one day in each. The Nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth is your Janma Nakshatra (birth star), the most personal and significant indicator in your entire birth chart. Each Nakshatra has its own ruling planet, presiding deity, symbol, element, and set of qualities that colour your entire life.
How to Find Your Janma Nakshatra
- You need your birth date, birth time (as accurate as possible), and birth city.
- Your Janma Nakshatra is determined by the Moon's position at the moment of your birth.
- Use your birth chart (below) to find your Moon's degree in the zodiac.
- Each nakshatra spans 13°20' — match your Moon's degree to the range shown on each nakshatra page.

Understanding Nakshatras
What is a Nakshatra?
A Nakshatra (Sanskrit: नक्षत्र) is a lunar mansion — a 13°20' segment of the ecliptic. The Moon passes through all 27 Nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days (a sidereal lunar month). Each Nakshatra is associated with a specific star or star cluster that acts as its anchor in the sky.
Why does the Nakshatra matter?
In Vedic astrology, the Nakshatra is often considered more significant than the Sun sign because it reflects the Moon — the mind, emotions, and unconscious patterns that govern daily life. Your Janma Nakshatra describes your deepest psychological nature, your instinctual responses, and your soul's karmic blueprint.
The 9 ruling planets (Navgrahas)
The 27 Nakshatras are ruled by 9 planets (each ruling 3 Nakshatras): Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury. The sequence follows the Vimshottari dasha system — the Nakshatra you were born in determines which planetary period (dasha) you begin life in.
Pada: the four quarters
Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20' each, corresponding to the 4 signs of a triplicity (fire, earth, air, water). The pada adds a secondary sign quality to the Nakshatra's main qualities, giving 108 total Nakshatra padas — corresponding to the 108 beads of a Japa mala.

Tara compatibility is based on the 9-fold Tara Bala system — both people's birth nakshatras are checked from each other's perspective. "Excellent" means both directions are favorable; "Challenging" means one or both nakshatras fall in an unfavorable Tara from the other. This is one of the 8 Ashtakoota kootas used in Kundali Matching.
