Grahan — Surya & Chandra Grahan

Upcoming solar and lunar eclipses with exact sutak timings (IST), Hindu ritual guidance, mantras to chant, and what to avoid. Updated with precise astronomical data.

Sutak applies only to visible eclipses. If an eclipse is not visible from your location (primarily India for this calendar), many traditions consider sutak and ritual restrictions optional. Each eclipse card below indicates India visibility clearly.

Surya Grahan (Solar Eclipse)

Occurs on Amavasya (new moon day) when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. Sutak begins 12 hours before the eclipse.

Chandra Grahan (Lunar Eclipse)

Occurs on Purnima (full moon day) when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon. Sutak begins 9 hours before the eclipse.

What is Grahan — the Hindu view

Why is grahan considered important in Hindu tradition?

In Vedic astrology, the nodes of the Moon — Rahu and Ketu — are said to "swallow" the Sun or Moon during an eclipse. The cosmic disturbance is believed to affect human consciousness, food, and the environment. This is why specific rituals and abstinences are prescribed.

What is sutak kaal?

Sutak (शुतक) is the inauspicious period that precedes a grahan. For Surya Grahan, sutak traditionally begins 12 hours before the eclipse. For Chandra Grahan, it begins 9 hours before. During sutak, cooking, eating, and new activities are restricted.

Does sutak apply if the eclipse is not visible in India?

Many scholars hold that sutak applies only where the eclipse is visible. If the eclipse is not visible from India, some traditions say the restrictions can be relaxed. However, practices vary by family, region, and tradition — consult your family pandit or follow your lineage's custom.

Why are pregnant women advised to stay indoors during grahan?

Ancient texts advise that the intense cosmic energies during an eclipse may be particularly sensitive for unborn children. While this is a traditional belief without modern scientific basis, many families observe this as a precaution out of reverence for the practice.

Why is dana (donation) after a grahan considered especially auspicious?

Scriptures say that any charitable act performed after a grahan multiplies in merit. Donating food, clothes, or money to those in need after taking your post-eclipse bath is one of the most powerful seva acts in the Vedic tradition.

What happens to food cooked before sutak?

Traditionally, food cooked before sutak is considered impure after the eclipse and should be discarded. Placing Tulsi leaves in food before sutak begins is believed to preserve its purity. Many families cook fresh food after the eclipse and their cleansing bath.

Vedic context

In Vedic mythology, Rahu and Ketu are the shadow planets — the north and south lunar nodes. The story of the demon Svarbhanu who drank the nectar of immortality and was beheaded by Lord Vishnu explains the eclipse: his severed head (Rahu) periodically swallows the Sun, and his tail (Ketu) swallows the Moon. Rahu and Ketu are powerful karmic indicators in any birth chart — their positions reveal our deepest patterns, fears, and destiny.
