What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik Dosha or Kuja Dosha) occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of a Vedic birth chart. These houses are sensitive to matters of marriage, family, home, and partnerships.

Mars is a fiery, assertive planet. When placed in these specific houses, traditional Vedic astrology holds that its energy can create friction in married life — particularly if one partner is Manglik and the other is not.

Important: Mangal Dosha does not mean problems are inevitable. Being Manglik is very common — estimates suggest 40–50% of people qualify. Many Manglik people have long, happy marriages. A qualified Jyotishi evaluates the full chart before drawing any conclusions.

The Six Dosha Houses

1Self, physical body and personality
2Family, speech and accumulated wealth
4Home, mother and domestic happiness
7Marriage, partnerships and spouse
8Longevity, in-laws and sudden events
12Loss, isolation and foreign lands

Some traditions count only 4 houses (1, 4, 7, 8); others include the 2nd and 12th. Our calculation uses the traditional 6-house definition.

Common Questions

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Yes, many Mangliks marry non-Mangliks and have happy marriages. Modern Jyotishis evaluate the complete chart before advising. If the non-Manglik's chart has strong benefic placements (e.g., an exalted Jupiter aspecting the 7th house), the dosha may be considered mitigated. Traditional remedies like Kumbh Vivah are also performed before the wedding.

Does Mangal Dosha cancel after age 28?

Some traditions hold that Mangal Dosha loses strength after 28 — the age at which Mars is said to 'mature'. This is widely cited but debated; not all Jyotishis accept this cancellation. Consult a qualified astrologer for personalised guidance.

What conditions cancel Mangal Dosha?

Many conditions can cancel or mitigate Mangal Dosha: Mars placed with or aspected by Jupiter; Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); a strong 7th house lord; the partner also having Mangal Dosha; and several other chart factors. Always consult a qualified Jyotishi for a full evaluation.

How accurate is this result?

Accuracy depends directly on the accuracy of your birth time — even a 10-minute difference can shift the ascendant and change house placements. This tool uses the same Vedic computation engine as our full kundali chart. For a complete assessment including all cancellation conditions, please consult a qualified Jyotishi.
