The most powerful of all 24 Ekadashis. A single Nirjala Ekadashi is equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashis of the year. Even Bhima, the strongest Pandava who could not fast on all Ekadashis due to an insatiable appetite, was advised to observe this one Ekadashi to gain the merit of all.

Bhima, the second Pandava, loved food and found it impossible to fast on each Ekadashi. Utpanna Ekadashi

Kartika · Lord Vishnu (Narayana) — and Ekadashi Devi herself

Utpatti Ekadashi

The origin Ekadashi — the day Ekadashi Devi herself was born. Ekadashi is actually a divine form (devi) who emerged from Lord Vishnu to defeat the demon Mura. On this day, the Ekadashi vrata itself came into existence. Therefore, this Ekadashi carries the merit of all Ekadashis — observing it establishes the entire year's Ekadashi practice.

कथा

The demon Mura (Murari) was terrorising the gods. Indra appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu fought the demon for 1,000 years without rest. When Vishnu rested, a divine effulgence emerged from His body — this was Ekadashi Devi. She slew the demon Mura while Vishnu slept. Pleased, Vishnu declared that those who observe the 11th tithi (Ekadashi) would receive His supreme grace.

कथा

A brahmin woman was devoted to fasting and puja but never donated food. She went to Vaikuntha after death but her house was empty — she had given nothing to Vishnu and received nothing in return. Vishnu sent her back to observe Shattila Ekadashi. She returned and her celestial home was filled with abundance.

Last Ekadashi of the Amanta lunar year — year-end spiritual cleansing before Chaitra (spring new year) begins.
